The Tang dynasty is widely regarded as the golden age of Chinese history. Its achievements in governance, military strength, economic prosperity, cultural development and international prestige reached remarkable heights. The cultural influence of the Tang dynasty remains profound in China and across the world today.

From April to August this year, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present ‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Prosperity and Magnificence – Civilisation of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Shaanxi Province’ Exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of History. Featuring a curated selection of artefacts from Shaanxi and Hong Kong alongside reconstructed historical settings, the exhibition introduces the splendour of the Sui and Tang dynasties to the public. In conjunction with the exhibition, the LCSD will organise the ‘Chinese Culture in Hong Kong Gardens – Nan Lian Garden’ Guided Tour, which aims to deepen local students’ understanding of the history and culture of the Sui and Tang dynasties, while fostering an appreciation for the dignity and elegance of Chinese civilisation.

Nan Lian Garden not only recreates the grandeur of the Tang dynasty, but also exemplifies Tang-style architectural and cultural traditions through its meticulous craftsmanship and refined garden design, making it a distinctive cultural landmark in Hong Kong. This programme will be led by professional docents who will guide participants through Nan Lian Garden, offering an in-depth appreciation of the architectural design and cultural vision embodied in this Tang-style garden. Coupled with historical interpretation and cultural insights, participants will be invited to experience the Tang dynasty’s spirit of openness, inclusiveness and cultural exchange, and to reflect on the creation and legacy of a flourishing civilisation while engaging in a dialogue between past and present.
