The ‘Unveiling History’ series, organised by the Chinese Culture Promotion Office (CCPO), is a free on-campus programme designed for local registered schools. Through replicas of artefacts or interactive materials from local and Mainland museums and meticulously designed history and cultural lecture and workshops, it supports teachers in developing cross-curricular learning in classroom and assists schools in better integrating Chinese cultural elements into their teaching.

In complement with ‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Prosperity and Magnificence – Civilisation of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Shaanxi Province’ Exhibition held at the Hong Kong Museum of History from April to August 2026, starting immediately, CCPO is launching the ‘Unveiling History’ series of activities themed around ‘Decoding the Sui-Tang History Through Dunhuang Art’. By using a selection of artefact highlights from the Dunhuang Academy, the programme enables local teachers and students to learn about the political, economic, and social contexts of the Sui and Tang periods through cave murals, offering insights into the openness, innovation, vitality and confidence of the two dynasties.

1. On-campus Lecture on ‘The Wonders of Dunhuang’

Nestled in the boundless desert, Dunhuang has witnessed the convergence of Central Plains and Western Regions civilisations for more than a thousand years. Along the Silk Road, countless royals, envoys, monks and merchants from the Western Regions braved the sandstorms with treasures and specialties, to traverse the desert to reach Chang’an. At the same time, many Central Plains merchants and monks travelled along the Silk Road to Central Asia, India and beyond, bringing Chinese silk, porcelain and Buddhist scriptures to the Western Regions, fostering a two-way cultural exchange. The Dunhuang Murals record the prosperity of the Sui and Tang periods, serving as important historical pictorial records that vividly depict the political, economic and social life of that era. We will send representatives to schools to conduct lectures, using selected murals and images from the Dunhuang Academy to showcase the splendour of China during the Sui and Tang dynasties.

2. Dunhuang Art Creative Workshop

This activity will use the exquisite murals and images from the Dunhuang Caves to introduce students to the aesthetics of Dunhuang art and the folk tales prevalent in the Sui and Tang dynasties. Students will also have the opportunity to create a Dunhuang-style artwork, enabling them to appreciate the spirit of humanity embedded in the art of the Dunhuang Caves.
