The ‘Unveiling History’ series, organised by CCPO, is a free on-campus programme designed for local registered schools. Through meticulously designed history and cultural lecture and workshops, it supports teachers in developing cross-curricular learning in classroom and assists schools in better integrating Chinese cultural elements into their teaching.

Starting immediately, ‘Unveiling History’ will launch activities themed around ‘Lingnan Culture’: Have you ever imagined how a coin from the Qin dynasty could help trace the origin of Hong Kong? Do you know that the pith paintings that once thrived in the West were made from material unique in Lingnan? In collaboration with the Guangzhou Museum, we shall compare selected museum collections from both places, guiding students through over two thousand years of history to explore the cultural bond that connects Lingnan culture with local history.

On-campus Lecture on ‘South of the Five Ridges: The Evolution and Essence of Lingnan Culture’ (complementary workshop to be launched soon)

Over two thousand years ago, Guangzhou (historically known as Panyu), the centre of the Lingnan region, was already an early starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. It attracted countless foreign merchants to travel through Guangzhou into the Central Plain to experience the splendour of Chinese material civilisation. Initially, silk was the primary commodity, but trade later expanded to include porcelain, tea and other treasures, with a continuous flow of various precious goods. During the Qing dynasty, the strict ‘Canton System’ of trade established Guangzhou as the nation’s sole foreign trade zone. In 1842, the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing between China and Britain ended Guangzhou’s exclusive status. Hong Kong, as a free port, inherited the vast trade capital, networks and talent accumulated by Guangzhou over the years, developing global commercial networks such as ‘Nam Pak Hong’ (South-North Trade Firms) and Gold Mountain Firms. We will send representatives to schools to conduct lectures, using selected artefacts from the Guangzhou Museum and various museums in Hong Kong to explain the evolution and essence of Lingnan culture.
