About the performers
Ma Wai-him* (Suona, Programme Curator)
Currently Principal Suona of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Ma Wai-him received his Master degree in suona and guan from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). His teachers included Guo Yazhi, Law Hang-leung, Liu Hai, Xia Boyan and Lo Wai-leung. He also furthered his training in suona under Liu Ying and guan under Hu Zhihou in the Mainland. Ma’s recent performances include the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s ‘As Stars Go By – The Ethereal Sounds of the Houguan’, ‘In the Mood – Suona and Guan Ensemble Concert’, ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine I’ and ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine II’, on which occasions he also performed as soloist and host to critical acclaim. Ma has forayed into music competition in recent years, exploring possibilities between tradition and innovation. After the release of his first music video single, La mémoire, in 2020, he has been invited to give online performances of original works and to make theme music videos.

Ma is currently a performing artist supported by the China National Arts Fund and visiting artist at the School of Music of the HKAPA. He has won the Award for Young Artist (Music) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2016 and the Silver Award – Folk Instruments section at the 16th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan.

Jazzclectic(Jazz band)
Jazzlectic introduces a new form of fusion music. While with contrasting musical backgrounds, the band members are deeply influenced by jazz music. Their music is ethnical, ranging from Chinese folk to European and American music styles, and presented with contemporary jazz harmony, rhythm and improvisation. Incorporating an interesting combination of Chinese and Western musical instruments, the band leads the audience to a cross-cultural musical journey of diverse musical colors and impressions.
